Incumbent Jefferson Parish School Board member Larry Dale, a member of the business backed majority that took control of the board in 2010, won his re-election bid Tuesday night, fighting off a challenge from Jefferson Federation of Teachers President Meladie Munch in a race that served as a metaphor for the larger battle between the union and the school board.

A total of 6,980 voters cast ballots for Dale, giving him about 56.6 percent of the vote. Munch received 5,354 votes.

Dale had based his campaign on the improvements in the school district since he and four other candidates backed by Jefferson Parish’s business community won in the 2010 election. Since then, the board and the teachers union have been at odds over issues including layoffs, assessments and the union’s collective bargaining agreement.
