A 24-year-old man died Sunday after his vehicle went into a canal in the 1100 block of Joe Yenni Boulevard in Kenner about 12:45 p.m., the Kenner Police Department said.
Lt. Brian McGregor said first responders found a 2007 Nissan 350 in the canal. They entered the canal and removed the driver, the sole occupant.
Raja Sikandar Mahmood, 24, of Kenner, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
McGregor said officers believe speeding and poor roadway conditions due to rain were factors in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation pending autopsy and toxicology results. Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to call Traffic Investigator Sgt. Jon Cryer at (504) 712-2336.
Earlier this year, there were people who drowned in cars that accidentally drove into a pair of canals in nearby Metairie. Jefferson Parish Council members have discussed erecting barriers or covering up the parish’s many drainage canals, but officials are still in the process of determining the best safety improvement options and how much they would cost.
