A reported attempted armed robbery on the perimeter of Lafreniere Park forced workers to shut down the Metairie park and its popular Christmas display early Monday night, officials said.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene just after 9 p.m., according to Glen Boyd, a spokesman for Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto. Witnesses said two men, clad in black and wearing masks, had brandished a gun and demanded money from a couple and then another man.
The two men were described as Hispanic males 18-22 years old and between 5-foot-4 and 5-foot-10 inches tall, who then left the scene in a pickup truck, Boyd said.
Workers shut the park and ushered visitors to the exit while the investigation progressed, said Keith Conley, the parish's chief operating officer. Parish officials are increasing the number of sheriff's office personnel and park rangers who will be at the park going forward, he said.
