“There’s nothing like going for the gold, even when your hair is silver.”
That was a motto used to promote the 13th annual St. Tammany Senior Olympic Games, which were held in April and May at different venues around the parish.
The games, which are open to people 50 years or older, attracted more than 150 senior athletes from the area who participated in four different sports.
Offerings this year included track and field in April, and pickleball, cycling and volleyball in May.
The St. Tammany Senior Olympic Games are presented each spring by COAST, the Council on Aging St. Tammany. Event coordinators for the 2014 games included Paul Bowman (track and field); Linda Neill (pickleball); John J. Morella (cycling); and Janey Perez (volleyball). The coordinators are directly involved with planning and handling the St. Tammany Parish Senior Olympic Games, and also assist with state and national competitions.
COAST collaborates each year with the Louisiana Senior Olympic Games to provide local, district and state competitions. This year’s state games will be held in the fall at various venues in Jefferson Parish. Top performers at the St. Tammany competition are eligible to participate in the state games.
“We are excited to be a part of the games and promote healthy, independent lifestyles,” COAST interim Executive Director Lisa Gilberti said. “We look forward to adding additional Olympic qualifying events such as tennis, bridge and swimming in the near future.”
