St. Tammany Parish Councilman Steve Stefancik, who has represented District 11 since 1988, is seeking re-election to the Slidell area seat.
The long-time incumbent has drawn opposition. Haley Galloway, an EMT and paramedic, recently announced her candidacy.
Stefancik, who retired from Lockheed Martin Space Systems in 2012, began his career on the Police Jury, serving as president of that body for five years. He chaired the Parish Council for two years and served as finance chairman for both of those bodies for a total of 13 years.
He has represented St. Tammany on the Regional Planning Commission for 28 years, helping to get more than $200 million in federal and state funds for projects that include the widening of Interstate 12 to six lanes and work on several highways.
As a councilman, he worked to acquire the Tammany Trace and Camp Salmen and on road projects that include a new Bayou Liberty bridge, the three-laning of U.S. 190 from Front Street to North Shore Square mall and the recent construction of T.J. Smith Sr. Expressway linking Airport Road to U.S. 1l.
“Although the boundaries of District 11 have changed several times during my tenure in office,I have always tried to adapt to the new environment to support and keep my constituents informed,’’ he said in a news release.
District 11 includes parts of Slidell, Lacombe and Pearl River.
Qualifying for the Oct. 24 election begins Sept. 8.
