Sharon Hewitt, who started off with an early lead that never faltered, beat M.P. “Pete’’ Schneider for Senate District 1 with 59 percent of the vote.
Two St. Tammany Parish precincts were still outstanding at 10:57 p.m., but Hewitt, a former engineer with Shell Oil, was leading by 4,409 votes.
The district is mainly in eastern St. Tammany Parish but includes parts of St. Bernard, of Orleans and Plaquemines parishes.
The two candidates, both Republicans, were seeking the seat left open by A. G. Crowe’s decision not to seek re-election.
Hewitt billed herself as a problem-solver who would bring logic to bear on the state’s problems, and Schneider, who runs his family business, St. Joe Brick, pointed to his business experience and four terms as a member of the state House of Representatives.
