St. Tammany Fire District No. 9, which covers the northeastern part of the parish around the community of Bush, has received a $294,000 federal grant to purchase firetrucks, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office.

The grant came from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Program.

“This grant will provide the Bush fire department with significant resources to guarantee our response teams have the most up-to-date equipment and vehicles that can literally make the difference between life and death,” Landrieu said.

The fire district has nine full-time employees and three fire stations, including one in the village of Sun.

In 2013, the district handled 375 calls, including fire, medical, false alarms and other calls, according to statistics posted on the district’s website.
