A 66-year-old woman who walked away from her home early Tuesday was found by St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies on La. 59 near Harrison Avenue in Abita Springs suffering from injuries that led to her death later in the day.

The woman’s injuries appeared to have been caused by an automobile, Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Bonnett said.

The woman’s son flagged down a deputy at a gas station near Harrison Avenue and U.S. 190 at 3:15 a.m. to say that he was trying to find his mother, who had left their home and not returned. Deputies canvassed the area, finding her just before 4 a.m. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

The Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with relevant information to call 911.
