A man with a gun was arrested after attempting to gain entry into a building at St. Tammany Parish government headquarters Thursday, a parish spokesman confirmed.
The man, whose name was not released, attempted to enter the refurbished caboose that serves as headquarters for the Tammany Trace, an approximately 30-mile walking and jogging path along an old rail line from Covington to near Slidell, Ronnie Simpson said Friday.
The man “wanted to speak to someone,” Simpson said.
Employees became alarmed, and called 911. When Sheriff’s deputies located the man, they found he was carrying a gun, Simpson said.
The same man was asked to leave the Trace last week after being spotted carrying a hatchet, according to an email sent by Council Administrator Don Henderson to members of the Council.
Additional security has been placed at the parish government complex at Koop Drive and officials are studying ways to increase security at the site, Simpson said.
