At the beginning of the school year, the St. Tammany Parish Library Teen Department organized a Teen Volunteer Council on each side of the parish. Both groups have been busy designing and implementing teen programming. In addition, the Teen Volunteer Council East based at the Slidell Branch has begun an initiative to give needy St. Tammany children a joyous literary Christmas.

The teens will hold a Holiday Book Drive until Dec. 5 to gather donations of new and gently used children’s books for ages preschool through 14. The books can be dropped off at the Slidell Branch at 555 Robert Blvd.

After business hours, books should be bundled with a note stating that they are for the TVC Book Drive and placed in the library book drop. The collected books will be donated to St. Tammany Project Christmas, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to giving the children of St. Tammany a complete Christmas.

The 13-member TVC East decided at its first meeting that it wanted to do the Holiday Book Drive. The group also has created successful teen events such as a program exploring the Day of the Dead traditions and an upcoming Teen Improv Night.

“I am very proud of this group of teens, and I am excited to see what they will come up with next,” said Hilari Farlow, teen librarian and TVC East coordinator.
