An 18-year-old man has been arrested and accused of firing a gun Saturday night during a large fight near the Tammany Trace hiking trail just north of Mandeville, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said Monday.

Kody McElveen, of Covington, was booked Monday morning on one count of illegal use of a weapon.

Detectives said McElveen fired a handgun during a fight Saturday evening that drew dozens of teenagers to an area near the Tammany Trace and Adair Street, according to Capt. George Bonnett of the Sheriff’s Office. Police arrived just before the shots were fired, responding to calls about a large group of teenagers in a parking lot just south of Florida Street.

The fight followed an attempt earlier in the week by two individuals to buy drugs, Bonnett said. Dozens of people were at the scene.

A school district spokeswoman cited state student privacy laws in refusing to say if any of those involved were St. Tammany Parish school system students or had been disciplined.

No one was injured in the incident. No other arrests have been made, but the investigation continues, Bonnett said.
