A Pearl River man will be booked on a count of attempted second-degree murder after he shot his former girlfriend in the face during an argument in Pearl River, setting off a manhunt that went on for hours, officials said.

Randy Lail was arrested without incident shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday after police received a tip on his whereabouts, Pearl River Police Chief JJ Jennings said.

Lail is accused of arguing with Destiny Dill, 21, about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday before pulling out a 9 mm rifle and shooting her in the face while she sat in a car on Peach Street. Lail and Dill had a relationship in 2015, Jennings said.

Dill was in critical but stable condition awaiting surgery, Jennings said.

Wednesday afternoon, Lail was still being interviewed at the Pearl River police station. He will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

After the shooting, Pearl River police and St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies searched for Lail for several hours to no avail.

The hunt resumed about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, and once information about the search was posted to social media, tips began pouring in, Jennings said.

Lail was located in a trailer just outside the Pearl River town limits and taken into custody.

During questioning, Lail admitted he had hidden the gun in a ditch, and he showed officers where it was, Jennings said.

In addition to the attempted murder count, Lail will be booked on a probation violation and being a felon in possession of a firearm, Jennings said.
