St. Tammany Parish public and Catholic schools will remain closed Thursday as the north shore thaws out from this week’s winter storm, spokeswomen for the two systems announced Wednesday.

Temperatures that hovered in the mid-to-low 30s for much of the day Wednesday meant some roads would remain dangerously icy Thursday morning despite much of the sleet and freezing rain stopping late Tuesday night, said Meredith Mendez, spokeswoman for the St. Tammany Parish School System.

The school system was asking all 12-month employees to report to work at noon Thursday to help prepare the schools for students’ return, Mendez said.

The decision to close Thursday was made after consultation with parish officials, Mendez said.

The school system has four weather days built into the calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. With Thursday’s closure, all four of the days have been utilized and any further weather-related closures will result in the school year being extended or the days being made up, she said.
