Cancer Center benefit

A “24 in 24” athletic event benefiting the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at CrossFit No Surrender, 625 Plaza Drive, Covington.

During the event, a new workout will begin on the hour for 24 consecutive hours. People can participate in or more of the workouts, sponsor a friend or recruit friends to contribute for each workout completed.

Matt Forte football camp

Matt Forte, an NFL All-Pro running back and a Slidell High graduate, will hold a youth football camp June 28 at the Slidell Youth Football Association fields.

The camp will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day and will be open to the first 250 children between the ages of 7-13 who register. There is no cost to register.

Experienced coaches will lead agility drills and will teach conditioning techniques as well as “position-specific” fundamentals. Forte will speak to campers during a mentoring segment intended to provide positive reinforcement and encourage campers to reject negative influences.

Sponsors for the camp are sought. Proceeds from those sponsorships will benefit the SYFA, where Forte played as a child.

SYFA BENEFIT TOURNEY: The Slidell Youth Football Association will hold a benefit golf tournament May 31 at Royal Golf Club in Slidell.

Registration for the event will begin at 11 a.m. and tee-off will begin at 1 p.m. The cost is $60 per golfer; hole sponsorships are available for $50.

PELICAN PARK SUMMER: Registration will close June 10 for summer recreational sports leagues at St. Tammany Parish Recreation District No. 1 (Pelican Park).

Basketball leagues are offered for girls ages 7-12 and for boys ages 7-18. The volleyball program is for girls ages 13-15.

New players must register at the Castine Center office on weekdays from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Returning players may register online at www.pelicanpark.com. For information, call (985) 626-7997.

SLIDELL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP: The 36th annual Greater Slidell Golf Championship will be June 27-29 at Oak Harbor, Pinewood and Royal golf courses.
