The St. Tammany Parish Library has been fortunate to have two local high school robotics teams, Team 2992, of Mandeville High School, and Team 1912, of Northshore High School, present demonstrations of their competition robots during “Fizz, Boom Read!” summer reading program events.
Both teams compete in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions. In January, the teams are given the challenge of the annual competition. The competition game in the 2013-2014 school year was called Aerial Assist and involved the teams scoring points by getting their robot to throw a large exercise ball into a goal on the far end of a playing field. Each robot had to be able to throw and catch a ball.
Each team then designed, built and tested their robot with the help of adult mentors who work in the engineering, mechanics and programming fields. In six weeks of working after school, the teams must be ready to compete with other high schools from across the country.
When not building or competing with their robot, each team does outreach events such as festivals, school events and library visits.
Mandeville High School’s team visited the Bush Library in early June with its robot Atlas to share the love of robotics and to let the children “play ball” with the robot.
“The kids thought their visit was fantastic, but parents were very excited, as well,” branch manager Marjie Jahncke said.
Families have the chance play with Atlas at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at the Folsom Branch, 82393 Railroad Ave. For information, call (985) 796-9728.
Please join us for the all the scientific fun at the library this summer! For information about summer reading events, visit the library’s events calendar at www.sttammanylibrary.org.
