A 25-year-old Folsom man was arrested Wednesday in the beating death of his 7-month-son, whom he admitted injuring because the baby's crying angered him, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

Corey Nauck brought his son Carter to a local hospital Monday with no explanation of his injuries.

The baby was in critical condition and was transferred to a hospital on the south shore, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Meredith Timberlake said. He died on Wednesday.

Another baby who was born to Nauck and his wife on Aug. 22, 2015, died when he was 4 months old.

The death of that child, who was named Tanner, was determined by the coroner at the time to be due to congenital heart disease, said a spokesman for Coroner Charles Preston.

"We are in the process of reviewing the case (of) Tanner Nauck," the spokesman said. "It has not been reclassified yet but will likely be classified as 'undetermined,' " a designation that leaves open the possibility that the death was not due to natural causes.

A memorial page on the website GoFundMe.com, which was set up by a family member, said loved ones were trying to raise $10,000 for hospital bills resulting from an accident Carter suffered, and possibly for funeral expenses. It said Carter's parents sadly knew how expensive that was after burying Tanner two years earlier.

“This was an innocent and helpless baby,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “The idea that his precious life was taken by his own father is incomprehensible. Nothing is more horrific than the murder of an infant.”

Detectives arrested Nauck at a family member's home in Gulfport, Mississippi. He later confessed that he had lost his temper, physically injuring his son because of his crying, Timberlake said.

The Coroner's Office performed an autopsy Wednesday with detectives present, and the death was ruled a homicide caused by blunt force trauma, according to Timberlake.

It was the first homicide of the year in St. Tammany Parish.

Carter was born on July 7. A posting on Corey Nauck's Facebook page that day announced the baby's birth.

"Missy Nauck and I have welcomed baby Carter Joseph Nauck into this world. Just letting everyone know he is doing just fine. And he is a beautiful baby boy. He is 5 pounds 11 ounces. He is 18 and half inches long," the posting said.

Nauck's profile says that he attended Covington High School and works as an able seaman at Triton Diving Services LLC.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for first-degree murder for Nauck. He was booked into the Harrison County jail in Mississippi and is awaiting transport to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where he will be booked on the murder count.

Preston said the deaths of children are difficult for the entire community.

"When the cause of death is an act of violence, it makes the cases even more troubling," he said. "Our prayers are with young Carter's family and with the investigators who are continuing to probe his death."
