A St. Tammany Parish jury deliberated less than two hours Wednesday before convicting Terral Brand, 33, of attempted aggravated rape of a 5-year-old girl who had been left in his care, according to Lisa Page, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Warren Montgomery.

The girl’s mother had left her with Brand in October 2013 so that the mother could go on a work-related trip.

While the mother was gone, the girl told a friend of the mother that Brand had performed oral sex on her and rubbed his genitalia against hers, Page said. The friend told the mother, who contacted police.

The child later told the same story to a doctor and then to a child advocate, Page said.

Brand told detectives that he had masturbated in front of the girl but that he was drunk and couldn’t remember anything else.

Brand, of Slidell, faces between 10 and 50 years in prison. He will be sentenced by Judge Allison Penzato on Feb. 22.

Editor's Note: This story was updated on Feb. 5, 2016, to correct the charge that Brand was convicted of to attempted aggravated rape.
