“Behind the Badge,” a television program produced by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs Division, recently received two awards from the Press Club of New Orleans.

Lt. Greg Gonzales, producer of the series, was presented with second- and third-place awards at the Press Club’s annual Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony, held in New Orleans.

The Sheriff’s Office was honored with a second-place award for an episode on the agency’s Traffic Division and a third-place award for its episode on the Investigations Division.

In the Traffic Division segment, Gonzales took viewers on a ride with motorcycle deputies and showed them what it is like to be a traffic deputy on the streets of St. Tammany.

The Investigations Division episode highlighted the Major Crimes Unit and the work it did to solve a Mandeville home invasion case.

Both episodes aired in 2013.

“I am proud of Lt. Gonzales for the work he does to creatively educate the public on the many things the men and women of this agency do, and I am pleased that the many hours he spends both behind the camera and editing are being recognized with these awards,” Sheriff Jack Strain said.

This was the first year the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office entered the awards competition, which included entries from area media outlets and public relations professionals.

The Sheriff’s Office began producing the “Behind the Badge” series in October 2006. It airs on St. Tammany Access Channel 10 and WLAE Channel 32. Episodes can be viewed at www.stpso.com.
