Mike Rivault, who was running for a seat on the St. Tammany Parish School Board, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the race.
Rivault was campaigning for an open seat being vacated by Roanne Tipton, who is not seeking re-election.
He was running against Michael Nation for the Mandeville-area seat, which includes Mandeville Elementary School and Mandeville Junior High School.
Rivault, the communications and marketing director for Southeastern Louisiana University, said he recently learned that it is illegal for a full-time state employee to hold local office.
“With much disappointment, I am withdrawing from the School Board race in St. Tammany,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
About the late discovery of the conflict between his employment and holding office, he wrote: “What’s most amazing is that no one apparently knew this until I stumbled upon it!”
Rivault congratulated Nation on the victory and thanked his supporters, saying he had a great time during the campaign.
