The St. Tammany Parish School Board is planning to vote at a special meeting Thursday night on naming an interim member to fill the District 14 seat left vacant by the death of Ray Alfred earlier this month. The board has invited candidates for the seat to submit letters of interest, which are due at noon Wednesday.
Alfred, who was the longest-serving member of the School Board, drew no opposition in the Nov. 4 election.
His interim replacement will serve until a special election March 18.
Letters should be addressed to School Board President Elizabeth Heintz and must be received at the C.J. Schoen Administrative Complex, 321 N. Theard St., Covington, according to the School Board’s website.
Letters can be delivered by hand, mailed or faxed to (985) 898-3281 but must arrive in time to be date-stamped by noon.
Letters should include the person’s contact information, age, current residential address within District 14, length of residence in District 14, length of residence in Louisiana and any other information to allow the School Board to assess the candidate’s credentials and experience.
Candidates whose letters arrive by the deadline will be allowed to address the School Board at the special meeting Thursday following a meeting of the committee as a whole, which begins at 7 p.m.
The School Board is expected to make a decision and swear in the new member that night.
