The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway north bound is closed due to an accident caused when one driver failed to stop for the open drawbridge and smashed into another, creating a chain-reaction and seriously injuring one driver, officials said.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m., according to Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou.
The first car apparently failed to slow and hit the rear of a car stopped on the incline near the drawbridge. The second car was pushed into the back of a truck, Dufrechou said. Causeway police, along with firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 4, cut the driver from the second vehicle. The driver was taken to a local hospital, Dufrechou said.
Louisiana State Police and Causeway Police are investigating the accident, Dufrechou said.
Dufrechou said he hoped the north bound span could be reopened around 1 p.m.
