When school ends and summer begins, our work at the St. Tammany Parish Library really heats up. Our summer reading program encourages children and teens to continue reading during the summer by offering great prizes and lots of wonderful events.

Each week a special guest performs for children at every library branch across the parish. This week Matt Sandbank from Nashville, Tenn., will visit six libraries to perform his shadow-puppet show, “A Wild Goose Chase!”

While teaching middle school, Sandbank was faced with the challenge of helping his students understand difficult concepts. He began building puppets with simply an overhead projector and cardboard scraps.

Four years ago, Sandbank began touring the nation performing puppet shows for audiences of all ages. Puppeteering is now his full-time job and passion.

“A Wild Goose Chase!” is a series of shadow-puppet vignettes that explore the elements of poetry while encouraging audience participation. Sandbank states that he is “dedicated to creating and performing puppet shows that promote literacy and excite young people about the power of words and the imagination.”
