Camp Upward is under way, through July 25, at Faith Bible Church, 1148 N. Columbia St., Covington.

Camp Upward, a function of Upward Community Services, is a faith-based camp that provides a fun, carefree time for children in St. Tammany and Washington parishes, including the children of the working poor.

For 23 years, Camp Upward has given any deserving child, ages 4-14, and a sanctuary from an unsupervised summer on the streets and a safe haven from gang and drug activity. For eight weeks, these kids engage in summer recreational and intellectual activities designed to nurture them both physically and spiritually.

During the camp, older participants will be taught interview and job application skills and will have the opportunity to visit local supporting businesses to learn how they operate. Youngsters will also be paid visits by business professionals who will deliver the message that adversity can be overcome to be successful.

“We want the campers to know that just because their lives may be difficult now, they don’t always have to be that way,” explained Camp Director Samone Young. “The lesson we’re seeking to teach is that through commitment and hard work, you can overcome many things as long as you stay focused and have faith.”

Volunteers and donations of “time, talent and treasure” are always welcome. Sponsorships for campers are needed, as well as sponsorships of camp counselors.

Corporate underwriting also offers excellent opportunities for team building and mentoring. Call (985) 893-5880 or send email to Young at Donations may be sent to Camp Upward, c/o Faith Bible Church, P.O. Box 630, Covington, LA 70434.
