A man riding a bicycle late Thursday on La. 1077 near U.S. 190 in Covington was hit by an oncoming vehicle and killed, State Police said.
Police gave this account of the accident:
Colby Garrett, 31, of Franklinton, who was headed north in the southbound lane around 10:55 p.m., traveled into the path of a southbound 2007 Jeep Wrangler driven by Beau Turner, 17, of Mandeville and was struck by the vehicle. Garrett hit the vehicle’s windshield and landed on the side of the roadway. Garrett, who was not wearing an approved bicycle helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office.
Turner was not injured and voluntarily submitted a breath sample, indicating no alcohol in his system. Impairment is not suspected on Garrett’s part, but toxicology samples were collected for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
