Funeral services for veteran Slidell Police Officer and former interim Slidell Police Chief, Eugene "Butch" Howard will be held at the Slidell City Auditorium, 2056 Second Street, on Tuesday at 11 am.
Visitation at the auditorium will begin at 9 a.m. Friends and family are invited to attend.
Howard, who served as Slidell's interim police chief for several months in 2016 and 2017, died Jan. 30 of natural causes at his home in Slidell.
He was 65.
Howard was named interim chief after former Chief Randy Smith was sworn in as St. Tammany Parish sheriff on July 1, 2016, serving until Randy Fandal took office in early 2017.
Howard served in the U.S. Army for six years before joining the Slidell Fire Department in 1975 and then the Slidell Police Department in 1979. He retired in 2007.
Over the years he served as chief of operations, assistant chief of detectives, undercover officer, patrolman and SWAT commander.
He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1998.
He returned to the department when Smith asked him to become interim chief in 2016.
Howard is survived by his life companion, Patricia Dianne Fowler, sister Michelle Candies Cousin, David Ledet (Diana) their children Willie Ledet, Holly Ledet Piske (Brandon) their son Jax Piske. He is predeceased in death by his parents Paul and Emily Howard.
