You’ve heard it said that dogs are man’s best friend. At the St. Tammany Parish Library, therapy dogs are the best friends of our youngest readers. Children can practice their skills by reading to the pups at multiple branches in upcoming events:

2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lacombe Library, 28027 U.S. 190. For information, call (984) 882-7858.

Noon Thursday at the Abita Springs Library, 71683 Leveson St. For information, call (985) 893-6285.

1 p.m. Wednesday at the Covington Library, 310 W. 21st Ave. For information, call (985) 893-6280.

At 3 p.m. July 20 at the Slidell Library, 555 Robert Blvd. For information, call (985) 646-6470.

Two St. Tammany therapy-dog organizations are offering their time and trained canines to help young readers at the library: Love on a Leash and Angels on Paws.

“We’ve had so much success with our Read with a Pup program at the Slidell Library,” said Slidell Library’s children’s librarian Jen Martin.

“Dax, a border collie, and Ruby Rose, a poodle, have provided help for our reluctant readers, beginning readers and those who lack reading confidence. I’ve definitely seen reading skills improve over time. We’ve had kids with learning disabilities and dyslexia who have found success when their audience was a dog.”
