The Pinewood Country Club summer swim team won the St. Tammany Swim League A Meet Championship held July 12 at Pinewood in Slidell.

The Porpoises totaled 1,846 points to pace the seven-team field. Lakeside Swim Club finished second with 1,522, and Cross Gates Gators placed third with 783 points. Rounding out the field were fourth, Barracuda Swim Team, 687.5; fifth, Slidell Athletic Club, 589; sixth, Picayune Blue Tide, 509.5; and seventh, Tanglewood, 313.

The meet ended prematurely due to foul weather. No butterfly events or medley relays were contested.

Cash Strickland set a new standard with a time of 17.96 seconds in the 7-year-old boys’ 25-yard butterfly.

Verny Ballax swam a 26.72 to win the 11-year-old girls’ 50 free.

Madelyn Byrd swam a 28.81 to win the 13 to 14-year-old girls’ 50 back.

The A Meet is a grouping of the fastest swimmers in the St. Tammany Swim League. Participants must swim a qualifying A time in a league event during the summer swim season.
