A Covington man was convicted Wednesday of raping and sexually abusing a young girl, according to Lisa Page, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Warren Montgomery.

A St. Tammany Parish jury found Robert Flowers, 29, guilty of two counts of aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery on the victim, who was younger than 13 when the crimes occurred, Page said.

The abuse started when a woman, Sandra Gaines, introduced the then 5-year-old girl to Flowers. The two repeatedly abused the girl together until 2012, the girl testified.

Flowers faces a mandatory life sentence on the aggravated rape charges and another 25 to 99 years on the sexual battery charges. He will be sentenced July 7.

Gaines is set for trial in August.
