Three men — one with a recent bullet wound — were arrested after would-be armed robbers exchanged gunfire with a Slidell homeowner Sunday night, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
Robert Steel, 30, and Anthony Ward, 24, both of Slidell, and Dustin Rupple, 21, of Lacombe, all face counts of attempted armed robbery with a firearm.
Steel and Rupple were booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail. Ward was arrested by New Orleans police at University Medical Center, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Suzanne Carboni. He has been booked in Orleans Parish while he awaits transfer to St. Tammany.
According to Carboni, a Slidell man was at his home on Acacia Drive when a man approached the house saying he had car trouble and asking to use the phone. The man tried to enter the house, but the homeowner blocked him, Carboni said.
A second man then emerged from the bushes, wearing a mask and pointing a gun at the homeowner, Carboni said. The homeowner pulled out his own pistol and exchanged shots with the two men, who fled in a dark-colored pickup.
Carboni said that because the investigation is ongoing, no further details would be released, including what role the third man is believed to have played in the incident.
