The Salmen Spartans are a game ahead with two go to in the District 8-4A boys basketball race.
The Spartans (20-9, 6-1) scored the last 19 points of the first quarter in beating the Pearl River Rebels (10-15, 0-7) 70-51 at Salmen on Feb. 6.
The Spartans actually went on a 23-0 tear early in the game, as they scored the first four points of the second quarter. Five Spartans were in double-figures in scoring, led by Rashawn Gallaspy (16). Keith Sandrock scored 11, and Corey Holmes, Jaden Williams and Kyran Donaldson each added 10.
“The game was won in the first quarter,” said Salmen coach Jay Carlin. “We played a lot of players the rest of the way.”
Still, Carlin wasn’t pleased with the way everything went.
“We need to be more consistent on offense,” he said. “I was also a little disappointed in our defensive performance. Pearl River hit nine 3-pointers, and that isn’t supposed to happen. We have to be better (this week).”
