The Covington-Mandeville Branch of the American Association of University Women is offering a $1,500 scholarship for a community college student from St. Tammany, Tangipahoa or Washington parish. The deadline to apply is May 26.
AAUW’s scholarship committee invites applications from women keen on advancing their education, no matter their age or circumstances. Nontraditional students are strongly encouraged to apply.
AAUW designed the scholarship for students who may not necessarily qualify for traditional performance-based academic scholarships. Branch President Eileen deHaro said the committee is reaching out to women who want to better themselves through education, even if their past grades are not very good.
“The ultimate goal is to help this student get a foothold toward a degree,” she said.
The $1,500 scholarship will offset the cost of books and supplies for a woman attending Delgado Community College, Northshore Technical Community College or Delta College. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation and a portfolio, which can contain anything the applicant thinks will set her apart. Applications and additional information are available on the AAUW website at covmande-la.aauw.net.
