A man was shot to death in a rapid burst of gunfire early Friday morning in St. Roch, according to New Orleans police and a nearby resident.

Officers responded to a call about shots fired about 3:15 a.m. around Arts and North Villere streets, police said.

Police said they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest in the 2400 block of North Villere Street. He was lying face down near a white Dodge Ram flatbed pickup truck, according to police. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Claire Wilson, 32, said she was in her residence nearby when she heard six shots then looked outside to see the man had been shot. She did not hear any kind of a disturbance before the shooting, she said.

"It was the only sound, was the gun," Wilson said. And there was no return fire. It was just one person shooting rapidly."

Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim, who they described as a 20 to 30-year-old man. Police asked anyone with information on the incident to contact Detective John Waterman at (504) 658-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
