A 25-year-old man died early Sunday after a gun he was carrying discharged, according to the Kenner Police Department

Lt. Brian McGregor said authorities responded to a shooting in the 240 block of Clemson Place in Kenner at 12:30 a.m.

After investigation, officers learned the man was inside an upstairs bedroom in his apartment. He was removing an unholstered handgun from his waist when it discharged, injuring him in the abdomen, police said.

The man was brought to University Hospital where he died.

Detective Kathleen Fronczak is in charge of the investigation.
