The fatal shooting of a New Orleans police officer overnight marks the department's fifth death in the line of duty since 2013. 

The officer killed in last night's incident — identified as 29-year-old Marcus McNeil — was killed during a patrol in New Orleans East just after midnight on Friday, according to NOPD superintendent Michael Harrison. 

The officer was transported to University Medical Center after the shooting, where he later died. 

Four other NOPD officer were killed during varying incidents in the past four years. 

Officer Natasha Hunter died after a suspected drunk driver struck her while she was in her cruiser diverting traffic from a crash scene on Interstate 10 in June 2016.

Officer Vernell Brown was killed after being struck by a car while investigating a vehicle fire on Pontchartrain Expressway in July 2015.

A month earlier, in June 2015, Officer Daryle Holloway was fatally shot while transporting an inmate.

In July 2013, Officer Rodney Thomas was killed by a hit-and-run driver after he got out of his car to investigate a crash on the I-10 high rise.
