A candlelight vigil originally scheduled to be held Monday in remembrance of Marcus McNeil, a New Orleans police officer who was shot dead early Friday morning, has been rescheduled.

NOPD said the memorial will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the 7th District station at 10101 Dwyer Road in New Orleans East.

An NOPD news release didn't specify a reason for rescheduling the vigil.

A 30-year-old gunman with a lengthy rap sheet allegedly shot McNeil dead before he was himself shot and captured.

On patrol early Friday in New Orleans East, McNeil and his colleague spotted something suspicious just after midnight and got out of their squad car.

Officials have offered few details about why the officers pulled over or what exactly happened next. But within moments, there was an exchange of gunfire that killed McNeil.

McNeil leaves behind a wife and two daughters, ages 2 and 5.
