A Harvey man was shot by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy Saturday night after he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the deputy, the JPSO said.
The incident happened in the 1100 block of Tallow Tree Drive in Harvey Saturday around 9:15 p.m.
Two JPSO deputies responding to a complaint in the area saw Demone Carto, 20, take part in a hand-to-hand drug sell. When the deputies identified themselves to Carto and approached him, the JPSO said he threw about 20 grams of marijuana to the ground then pulled a semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the deputies.
One of the deputies fired three rounds from his duty weapon, hitting Carto once in the lower back. The JPSO said Carto's wound is non-fatal and he is in stable condition after having surgery at University Hospital.
The JPSO said all evidence and witness statements from the incident suggest the use of force by the deputy was reasonable and necessary, and Carto will be charged with various crimes upon release from the hospital.
