New Orleans police said they jailed a 33-year-old woman on allegations that she shot a 20-year-old man in the face in the Marigny on Friday afternoon.
Police said they booked Crystal Baumann on a count of aggravated battery by shooting, and the victim remained hospitalized at University Medical Center early Friday evening in critical condition.
According to police, Baumann and the victim were arguing about 12:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of North Rampart Street when she pulled a gun out and fired one bullet into his face.
As the victim was rushed to the hospital, police took Baumann to the headquarters of the police district that patrols the Marigny. She declined to make a statement to investigators and was booked.
While police didn't release any more details about the incident, neighbor Ben Gitchel said the shooting occurred after hours of argument between the woman who lived at the pale pink house and a man outside on the street.
"They were just like back and forth, back and forth," he said.
Then, a little after noon, Gitchel heard a sharp "pop, pop," he said.
"That's not a good thing at all," he told himself.
Gitchel said he saw the woman of the house placed in handcuffs soon after. The incident left a large splotch of blood on the street nearby.
Afterwards neighbors on the normal quiet street rushed outside, he said.
"Everybody was like, 'What the hell's going on?'" he said.
Police asked anyone with information about the case to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
