A LaPlace man accused of punching his baby's mother as well as the child during a fight over custody is behind bars on a count of attempted murder, according to authorities.

Ronald Lathers, 29, has been in jail since Tuesday in lieu of $500,000 bond, the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Five days before his arrest, Lathers and the unidentified woman were arguing in the 100 block of Montegut Avenue in LaPlace over his wanting to take his 7-week-old child from her, the Sheriff's Office said. The argument escalated into a physical fight, and Lathers struck the woman with a closed fist as she held their infant, the Sheriff's Office said.

The woman said Lathers also hit their baby in the head, according to the Sheriff's Office said.

Emergency medical personnel later arrived and took the woman and the child to a local hospital. The woman was treated and released, and the baby remained at the hospital in stable condition on Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said it booked Lathers after obtaining murder to arrest him on a count of attempted first-degree murder on Tuesday.

Tuesday was not the first time St. John deputies have arrested Lathers. He was arrested on a misdemeanor count of simple battery in the summer of 2015, though the details of that incident weren't immediately available.
