One New Orleans police officer has died after wounds sustained in a shootout Thursday night, authorities said.

At least one police officer wounded the suspected killer, who was arrested but taken to the hospital for treatment, Chief Michael Harrison and Mayor Mitch Landrieu said during an overnight news conference.

The slain officer's name wasn't immediately released to allow his relatives the opportunity to notify extended family about his killing. His accused killer was only described as a 30-year-old man.
