A man was shot by Slidell police Friday evening after an alleged armed robbery. 

Update, 5:02 p.m., Jan. 14, 2017: Louisiana State Police have identified the robbery suspect who was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with Slidell Police, WWL-TV reported.

The suspect has been identified as Michael Donato.

After he is released from the hospital, state police told the station, the 26-year-old will be booked with one count of attempted first degree murder of a police officer and one count of armed robbery.

The investigation is ongoing.

A robbery suspect was shot at about 7:40 p.m. in Slidell Friday in an exchange of gunfire with Slidell police, according to a news release.

Officers had been sent to an armed robbery in progress near Gause Boulevard and Rue Rochelle Drive when the shooting broke out. The suspect, who was injured, was taken to an area hospital.

No police officers were injured.

Slidell Police, Louisiana State Police and the St Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.

No further details will be released, police said.
