One woman is dead and another woman is being treated for injuries following a double shooting in Algiers Saturday evening, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The shooting happened in the 800 block of Vallette Street around 7:18 p.m. A neighbor heard a gunshot and entered the residence, where she found a juvenile girl. The neighbor took the girl out of the home and called 911, police said in a preliminary offense log.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the door to the residence open and a 29-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside. Another woman had also suffered a gunshot wound, police said.
The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second victim was transported to an area hospital by EMS.
The juvenile girl was placed into protective custody.
Through the course of the investigation, officers discovered both women were involved in an altercation. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, but investigators are still trying to identify a person or persons of interest in the incident, as well as a motive.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine official cause of death and release the deceased victim's name upon completion of an autopsy and notification of family.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call NOPD Homicide Detective Bruce Brueggeman at 504-658-5300, or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
