Eight people were injured in six separate shootings on Sunday in New Orleans, including a shooting on Interstate 10 eastbound that shut down traffic for a brief time, police said.

Around 6 p.m., a 29-year-old man was traveling on I-10 eastbound near Orleans Avenue when “a vehicle pulled up and the occupants opened fire on him,” the New Orleans Police Department said in a preliminary offense log. The victim went to an area hospital by private conveyance.

All lanes were closed on I-10 eastbound at Orleans Avenue for a little more than an hour while police investigated the shooting.

Earlier Sunday, two men were injured in a shooting in New Orleans East. A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old man were shot by a suspect or suspects in a black vehicle, police said. The shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at Aberdeen Road and Benson Street.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., a 58-year-old was found shot in the 3900 block of Fourth Street in Central City, police said. He was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

Police reported another shooting in Central City around 11:40 p.m. A 53-year-old man was near Jackson Avenue and South Robertson Street when he heard gunshots and ran, hiding under a house. He realized he was shot and walked to an area hospital, police said.

In all, eight people were shot on Sunday in New Orleans, according to police, who reported three victims in two shootings early Sunday morning. 

Local crime analyst Jeff Asher said that 716 people have now been shot in New Orleans over the past 365 days, equivalent to 1.96 people shot per day. 

In other New Orleans crime news: 

• Police on Monday identified Ishmel Wiltz, 21, as a suspect in a robbery in the 8500 block of Nelson Street in the Leonidas neighborhood about 5 a.m. Sunday. In that incident, a woman told police she was pushed to the ground, hit and bit by a man who snatched her purse and fled on a bicycle. 

• Police on Monday said they arrested 30-year-old Shawn Scott on suspicion of smashing the window of a woman's house in New Orleans East and threatening to fire bullets inside while wielding a gun Thursday. Scott fled the scene in the 14000 block of Duane Road, but police said they soon captured him nearby. 

• Rashad Devezin, 31, was booked on counts of theft, criminal trespassing, aggravated assault and simple burglary on Friday, police said Monday. Officers patrolling the area of Pressburg Street and Bullard Avenue noticed Devezin riding by and arrested him after a brief chase, police said.
