Delgado Community College broke ground Friday on a new Delgado Maritime and Industrial Training Center.

The 18,750-square-foot building, designed by Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects, will replace the former facility on Old Gentilly Road, near the NASA Michoud complex. The $7 million project is being funded by state bonds.

Like the existing facility, the new one will provide maritime and industrial firefighting, radar, safety and U.S. Coast Guard-approved training, including bridge simulator courses. Delgado Community College has campuses throughout New Orleans and serves about 9,000 students.
