A major auction of surplus buildings and vacant land owned by the Orleans Parish School Board that had been set to take place at 10 p.m. Thursday has been canceled.

The auction was to take place at the board’s offices on Gen. de Gaulle Drive in Algiers. Among the properties on the auction block were a handful of school buildings designed by the noted architect E.A. Christy.

But the board voted Tuesday to cancel the auction after some community residents and leaders expressed misgivings about selling some of the properties, according to nola.com.

The website reported that the board asked staff members to report back on the properties in a month, with the idea that some of them might be sold at that point.
