A Metairie science teacher has been named one of four finalists in the sixth annual Shell Science Lab Challenge, a competition that rewards innovative approaches to delivering quality lab experiences with limited resources.
Kassie Cusachs, of Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, was cited for her lesson planning, which includes three main strategies: a real-world connection to objectives, a literacy activity, and an opportunity for students to investigate hands-on. The competition included teachers from the United States and Canada.
Kusachs won a science lab makeover support package valued at $8,500. The prize includes a $3,000 cash grant to buy science/lab equipment and resources; a $3,000 gift certificate from Carolina Biological Supply Co. for equipment and books; and $1,000 in National Science Teachers Association prizes.
