With more than a third of precincts reporting, St. John the Baptist Parish District Attorney Tom Daley is out to an early lead in his bid for a second term.

Daley, who was a judge before winning his current post in 2008, had about 46.7 percent of the vote with 19 of 48 precincts reporting, according to preliminary figures from the secretary of state’s office. Bridget Dinvaut, one of his assistant district attorneys and chairwoman of the Southern University Board of Supervisors, had about 33.6 percent.

Geri Broussard Baloney, a LaPlace lawyer who lost a 2002 race for the district attorney’s job, had about 19.7 percent.

Daley would need to garner just more than half the vote to avoid a runoff.
