Edward Theriot, director of administration for Plaquemines Parish, was sworn in as interim parish president Tuesday.
Theriot succeeds Amos Cormier, who died at a Gretna hospital last week shortly after undergoing heart surgery.
Theriot was approved by the Plaquemines Parish Council at a special meeting by a 6-0 vote with three abstentions. The council also voted to hold a special election Nov. 8 to choose Cormier’s permanent replacement.
Theriot is barred from running for the post as a condition of serving as interim president.
“In honor of Amos Cormier’s vision for Plaquemines Parish and the continued support of our community, we will work together for a brighter future,” Theriot said in a written statement. “I look forward to serving Plaquemines to the best of my ability.”
