With many Uptown streets under heavy construction, the New Orleans City Council has agreed in some cases to relax a law that requires drivers to park in the same direction as traffic.
The new rule, proposed by Councilwoman Susan Guidry, passed by a 5-0 vote Thursday.
A city ordinance requires drivers to park in the same direction as traffic on the street or the closest side of a two-way street — a regulation that Guidry said many people, including herself, don’t know about until they get a ticket.
The council voted not to enforce that rule on blocks that become temporary dead ends because they are cut off due to construction. The new rule will apply only from the dead end to the first intersection and does not apply to one-way streets.
“I think that’s going to make life easier,” Guidry said.
