Starting on Sunday, North Rampart Street will be shut down for a month near its intersection with Canal Street while workers connect the two existing streetcar lines in the area to the line now under construction along Rampart.

The work will require detours on North Rampart and lane closures and changes to bus routes on Canal.

The work will go on 24 hours a day, seven days a week until it is completed, according to the Regional Transit Authority.

Lakebound traffic on Canal will be shifted to the riverbound side of the street between Burgundy and Basin streets.

North Rampart will be closed between Canal and Iberville Street, which will remain open. Traffic in the upriver direction will be detoured onto Bienville Street and then Basin Street. Downriver traffic on O’Keefe Avenue and South Rampart will be detoured to Basin as far as Conti Street.

Streetcar service on the Loyola and Canal streetcar lines will be suspended during the construction period and replaced with buses. The St. Charles Avenue streetcar line will operate only between Webster Street and South Claiborne Avenue during that time; buses will operate between Webster and Canal.

Pedestrians and bicyclists will be required to cross Canal Street at either Basin Street or Burgundy Street, although the sidewalk around the Saenger Theatre will remain open to pedestrians.
