Jefferson Parish will build a pumping station near the Shrewsbury neighborhood in Old Jefferson to improve drainage.
The parish said Tuesday that it has received $600,000 in federal hazard mitigation grants for the design of the project, which will benefit an area bounded by Airline Drive to the north, the Orleans Parish line to the east, River Road to the south and St. George Avenue to the west.
The Manson Ditch Drainage Improvement Project will pull water from the Illinois Central Railroad ditch and discharge it into the detention pond at Earhart and Causeway boulevards, allowing local drainage systems to function better.
There is no target completion date yet, but the parish said the Federal Emergency Management Agency will do an environmental assessment after the design is finished that “will allow for an aggressive construction schedule placing this new station in operation as quickly as possible so that residents may enjoy the increased drainage it will bring.”
